Caine, (Sir Thomas Henry) Hall

Caine, (Sir Thomas Henry) Hall (1853–1931), novelist, of Manx and Cumberland parentage. He corresponded with D. G. Rossetti and spent the last few months of Rossetti's life as his housemate: see Caine's Recollections of Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1882). He edited Sonnets of Three Centuries (1882) in which all three Rossettis and W. B. Scott appeared. He achieved sensational success with his novels, such as The Manxman (1894), The Christian (1897), The Eternal City (1901), The Prodigal Son (1904), and The Woman of Knockaloe (1923), many set on the Isle of Man. The Woman Thou Gavest Me (1913) was an attack on women's position in society and a criticism of the marriage laws. (1997). B. Stoker and G. B. Shaw were among his friends.

Hall Caine

Hall Caine (Sir Thomas Henry Hall Caine), 1853–1931, English novelist. Secretary to Dante Gabriel Rossetti, he lived with him from 1881 until the poet's death and wrote Recollections of Rossetti (1882). His enormously popular novels, some of Manx life, others on biblical themes, include The Shadow of a Crime (1885), The Deemster (1887), The Manxman (1894), The Christian (1897), The Prodigal Son (1904), and The Master of Man (1921).
