H. E. Bates

H. E. Bates (Herbert Ernest Bates), 1905-74, English author, b. Rushden, Northamptonshire. During World War II he served with the Royal Air Force. A good storyteller, Bates had the ability to render the sense of a particular place and time and was noted for his descriptions of the English countryside. Among his many novels are Fair Stood the Wind for France (1944), The Jacaranda Tree (1949), and The Triple Echo (1970).

Bates, H. E. ( Herbert Ernest Bates) (1905–74), novelist and short story writer. His works include volumes of stories, The Woman Who Had Imagination (1934), The Flying Goat (1939), and The Beauty of the Dead (1940); and novels, The Two Sisters (1926), The Fallow Land (1932), Love for Lydia (1952), and The Darling Buds of May (1958). He also published three volumes of autobiography.

To Be in England (1963), and A Little of What You Fancy (1970).
