Gulf of Tonkin Resolution
Gulf of Tonkin Resolution a resolution passed by Congress on August 7, 1964, to approve President Lyndon B. Johnson's decision to use military force to prevent further Communist aggression in South Vietnam. It was a functional, not actual, declaration of war. It was repealed by Congress in January 1971, but American involvement in the Vietnam War continued through the early 1970s.
