Castro y Bellvís, Guíllen de

Castro y Bellvís, Guíllen de (1569–1631), Spanish dramatist, chiefly remembered for his dramatization of the ballads celebrating the exploits of Spain's national hero the Cid. Las mocedades del Cid, in two parts, first published in 1618, formed the basis of Corneille's Le Cid (1637). Castro wrote a number of other plays, including many comedies in the style of his friend and contemporary Lope de Vega, and made three dramatizations of parts of Cervantes' Don Quixote of which the best concentrates on the episode of Cardenio and Lucinda.
