Guildford
Guildford, UK, USA 1. UK (England): previously Gyldeforda, Gyldeford, and Geldeford. The name probably means ‘Ford by the Golden (sandy) Hill’ from a possible Old English word gylde and ford. However, the ‘golden’ might refer to the golden‐coloured sand on the bed of the ford.2. USA (Connecticut): previously Menunketuk when settled by Puritans in 1639, it was renamed four years later after the town in England.3. USA (North Carolina): named after Francis North (1637–85), 1st Earl of Guildford and lord chancellor (1682–5).
