Guglielmo della Porta (d. 1577). Italian sculptor. He is first documented in Genoa, in 1534, but he spent most of his career in Rome. Vasari says he moved there in 1537, but he is not documented in the city until 1546. The following year he succeeded Sebastiano del Piombo as keeper of the papal seals. Guglielmo had a prolific and varied career, his work including several papal busts and a number of tombs in Roman churches, the most important being that of Paul III in St Peter's (1549–75). He also produced numerous small devotional and pagan statuettes and worked as a restorer and copier of antique works. The major influence on his style was Michelangelo and he had a penchant for reclining figures in the manner of the master's Day and Night, Dawn and Evening in the Medici Chapel, Florence.
