Gretna Green
Gretna Green, Scotland/UK Gretenho, Gretenhou, Gratnay ‘Green by Gretna’ with Gretna ‘gravel hill’ from the Old English grēota ‘gravel’ and hōh ‘hill’. Gretna Green was a place that attracted eloping couples in the 18th–20th centuries for the ease with which they could get married. Parental approval for marriage between individuals over the age of sixteen was not required, whereas in the rest of the UK it was 21. In 1969 the legal age of consent in the whole of the UK became eighteen.
