Gretna Green

Gretna Green, Scotland/UK Gretenho, Gretenhou, Gratnay ‘Green by Gretna’ with Gretna ‘gravel hill’ from the Old English grēota ‘gravel’ and hōh ‘hill’. Gretna Green was a place that attracted eloping couples in the 18th–20th centuries for the ease with which they could get married. Parental approval for marriage between individuals over the age of sixteen was not required, whereas in the rest of the UK it was 21. In 1969 the legal age of consent in the whole of the UK became eighteen.

Gretna Green

Gretna Green village, Dumfries and Galloway, S Scotland, on the border with England. It was famous as a place of runaway marriages from 1754, when English marriage law was tightened, until 1856, when a law was passed requiring that one of the parties to marriage in Scotland must reside in Scotland for at least 21 days before issuance of the license.

Gretna Green a village in Scotland just north of the English border near Carlisle, formerly a popular place for runaway couples from England to be married without the parental consent required in England for people under a certain age.
