Fernández, Gregorio
Fernández, Gregorio (or Gregorio Hernández) (b Sarria, Galicia, c.1576; d Valladolid, 22 Jan. 1636). Spanish sculptor, active for all his known career in Valladolid, where he is first recorded in 1605. He was one of the great masters of the polychrome wooden statue, continuing the expressive tradition of Juan de Juni but in a more realistic manner (he abandoned the earlier practice of lavish use of gold in favour of naturalistic colouring). Among the numerous altarpieces from his workshop are those of S. Miguel, Valladolid (1606), and Plasencia Cathedral (1624–34). He is well represented in the Museo Nacional de Escultura, Valladolid.
