Greeley

Greeley city (1990 pop. 60,536), seat of Weld co., N Colo., at the base of the Front Range of the Rocky Mts.; inc. 1885. It is a rail and trade center for a rich irrigated farm area. There is meatpacking and other food processing and the manufacture of bridges, apparel, chemicals, and software. Greeley was founded (1870) by Horace Greeley through his agent, Nathan C. Meeker, as a cooperative farm and temperance colony. Meeker was killed in the Ute uprising of 1879; his home is a museum. The city is the site of the Univ. of Northern Colorado and has a symphony orchestra, a theater, and an art gallery. Greeley also holds an annual rodeo.

Greeley, USA Colorado: founded in 1870 as Union Colony, a cooperative agricultural enterprise. It was renamed in recognition of the support of Horace Greeley (1811–72), a newspaper editor and presidential candidate in 1872.
