The Columbia Encyclopedia, Sixth Edition
Greeley city (1990 pop. 60,536), seat of Weld co., N Colo., at the base of the Front Range of the Rocky Mts.; inc. 1885. It is a rail and trade center for a rich irrigated farm area. There is meatpacking and other food processing and the manufacture of bridges, apparel, chemicals, and software. Greeley was founded (1870) by Horace Greeley through his agent, Nathan C. Meeker, as a cooperative farm and temperance colony. Meeker was killed in the Ute uprising of 1879; his home is a museum.
