Grandville

Grandville (pseudonym of Jean-Ignace-Isidore Gérard) (b Nancy, 15 Sept. 1803; d Vanves, nr. Paris, 17 Mar. 1847). French caricaturist and illustrator. In 1825 he settled in Paris, where he became one of the leading political cartoonists until censorship outlawed such work in 1835. Subsequently he turned mainly to book illustration, notably of classic texts such as Don Quixote, Gulliver's Travels, and especially La Fontaine's Fables (1838). He often satirized people by depicting them as animals, and in some of his work he created bizarre hybrid forms of animate and inanimate objects. In 1844 he published a collection of nonsense drawings entitled Un autre monde, loosely linked by a text. The book has been postulated as a source for Tenniel's illustrations to Alice in Wonderland (1865) and even for parts of Lewis Carroll's text. Later the book appealed to the Surrealists. Grandville died in a lunatic asylum.
