Gottlieb Daimler , 1834-1900, German engineer, inventor, and pioneer automobile manufacturer. His improvements in the internal-combustion engine, made in the 1880s, contributed largely to the development of the automobile industry. In 1890 he founded the Daimler Motor Company at Cannstatt, Germany.

Daimler, Gottlieb (1834–1900) German engineer and automobile manufacturer. In 1883, with Wilhelm Maybach, Daimler developed an internal combustion engine and powered a motorcycle and then his first car (1886). In 1890, he founded the Daimler Motor Company, which made Mercedes cars, and became Daimler-Benz (1926), then Daimler-Chrysler (1998).
