Gormlaith
Gormlaith
1. 1. Daughter of the king of Leinster whose third husband was Brian Bórama (Boru). Sometimes called ‘The Queen Mother of Dublin’, she is described in texts as a beautiful, powerful, intriguing woman, skilled at manipulating men. A notorious divorcee, she had four husbands: (1) the great Máel Sechnaill II [Malachy]; (2) Olafr Kvaran [Amhlaobh, ‘the Shoe’], the Norseman by whom she bore Sitric [Sigtryggr], first king of Dublin; (3) Brian Bórama, who put her aside for favouring the Danes before the Battle of Clontarf (1014); and (4) Ospak, a Norseman from the Isle of Man whom she hoped to move against Brian. 2. 2. Queen of Niall Caille at Tara who was abducted, with all her women of her court, by Fedlimid mac Crimthainn in 840. 3. 3. Daughter of Flann, queen of Niall Glúndub, for whom the O'Neill family is named; distinguish from the earlier Uí Néill. |
