Good Samaritan
Good Samaritan The usual name given to Jesus' parable in Luke 10: 29–37. It is the story of a Jew mugged on the lonely road from Jerusalem to Jericho. Passing by were a priest and a Levite, but fearing ritual contamination which would have inhibited them from religious duties, they gave no help. Jesus' listeners were probably surprised to learn the identity of the third traveller—not, as they expected, a lay Israelite (so that the parable would have been a straightforward piece of anticlericalism) but a Samaritan, hated by the Jews (John 4: 9); he overcame his scruples and gave assistance, and more. So the parable turns out to be anti-racist.
