Gonzales Coques

Gonzales Coques , 1614-84, Flemish portrait painter, active in Antwerp and England. He excelled in painting diminutive portraits and family groups of the aristocracy with meticulously executed backgrounds. The elegance of his paintings won him the title "the little Van Dyck." Coques is represented in the galleries of Berlin, Dresden, Paris, London, Vienna, and Philadelphia.

Coques, Gonzales (b Antwerp, ?1618; d Antwerp, 18 Apr. 1684). Flemish genre and portrait painter, known as the ‘little van Dyck’, although his style is much closer to Terborch. He worked mainly in Antwerp, but he also travelled to Holland and England. His best works, charming and daintily executed, are small-scale fashionable group portraits such as A Family Group (c.1664, NG, London).
