Goliath
Goliath The Philistine giant from Gath, over 2.8 m. (9 feet) tall, who issued a challenge to any individual Israelite to combat, to which David responded with a sling and five stones. He struck Goliath's forehead and knocked him unconscious, and then seized his sword and beheaded him (1 Sam. 17: 38–51). Some scholars hold that the giant of 1 Sam. 17 was originally anonymous—he is named only at verse 23—and that Goliath was slain by a certain Elhanan (2 Sam. 21: 19).

Goliath
Goliath in the Bible, a Philistine giant and warrior, according to legend killed by David (1 Samuel 17) armed only with a sling and ‘five smooth stones’; the contest between the young David and Goliath is often taken as a type of apparently unequal combat.
According to another tradition, the giant killed by David was originally unnamed, and Goliath was killed by Elhanan (2 Samuel 21:19). |

Goliath
Goliath , in the Bible, a giant of Gath , a Philistine city, who challenged the Israelites. The young David , fortified by faith, accepted the challenge and killed him with a stone from a sling. In 2 Samuel it says that Elhanan killed Goliath, though 1 Chronicles says Elhanan killed Lahmi the brother of Goliath. The Authorized Version edits 2 Samuel to agree with 1 Chronicles. |
