Gippsland
Gippsland, Victoria/Australia Caledonia Australis A region originally named in 1839 by Angus McMillan, who made the first European exploration, after his native Scotland. It was renamed a year later by a Polish explorer, Paul Strzelecki, after Sir George Gipps (1791–1847), governor of New South Wales (1838–46) and a man who strongly encouraged exploration and the development of colonial resources.

Gippsland
Gippsland , geographical area, 13,655 sq mi (35,366 sq km), Victoria, SE Australia, E of Melbourne. There are deposits of coal, oil and natural gas (offshore), and limestone. Gold was formerly mined. Dairy and beef cattle are raised, and corn, oats, and sugar beets are grown. The region also supports timber and tourist industries. |
