Segantini, Giovanni

Segantini, Giovanni (b Arco, nr. Trento, 15 Jan. 1858; d Schafberg, Switzerland, 28 Sept. 1899). Italian painter, mainly of figure compositions in landscape settings, active for most of his career in the Swiss Alps. His early work was naturalistic, but from the later 1880s he developed a divisionist technique and a liking for Symbolist subjects (The Punishment of Luxury, 1891, Walker AG, Liverpool). He exhibited widely and was one of the few Italian artists of his time with an international reputation. There is a Segantini museum at St Moritz.

Segantini, Giovanni

Segantini, Giovanni (1858–99). Italian painter, mainly of figure compositions in landscape settings, active for most of his career in the Swiss Alps. Giovanni Segantini

Giovanni Segantini , 1858-99, Italian painter, b. in the Tyrol. A herder in his youth, he is known for his portrayal of Alpine peasant scenes. Although his early work is neoimpressionist in its love of nature, he made more symbolic paintings in the last years of his life. Well known among his works are The Punishment of Luxury (Liverpool) and At the Watering Place (Basel). The Segantini Museum is in St. Moritz, Switzerland.
