Giovanni Battista Moroni , c.1525-1578, Italian portrait painter of the Brescian school; pupil of Il Moretto. Surpassing his teacher in the ability to capture the expression of the model, Moroni excelled in portraying with tasteful intimacy the aristocratic men and women of his day. He depicted them realistically but with a Venetian flair for style. There are notable examples of his art in the National Gallery, London; the Metropolitan Museum; the Philadelphia Museum; and the Uffizi.

Moroni, Giovanni Battista (c.1520/4–1578). Italian painter. He trained under Moretto in Brescia and worked mainly in his home town of Albino and in nearby Bergamo. His style was based closely on that of his master, but whereas his religious paintings are unexceptional, his portraits are worthy successors to Moretto's. They are remarkable for their psychological penetration, dignified air, and exquisite silvery tonality. The National Gallery, London, has the best collection of his work, including the celebrated portrait known as ‘The Tailor’ (c.1570).

Moroni, Giovanni Battista (b Albino, c.1520/4; d Albino, ?(5 Feb.) 1578). Italian painter. He trained under Moretto in Brescia and worked mainly in his home town of Albino and in nearby Bergamo. His style was based closely on that of his master, but whereas his religious paintings are unexceptional, his portraits are worthy successors to Moretto's, being among the finest of their time (several of them indeed have formerly been attributed to Titian). They are remarkable for their psychological penetration, dignified air, and exquisite silvery tonality. The National Gallery, London, has the best collection of his work, including the celebrated portrait known as ‘The Tailor’ (c.1570).
