Gillingham
Gillingham , city (1991 pop. 92,531) and district, Kent, SE England, on the Medway River. Some of the Chatham dockyards (repair and supply facilities) are in Gillingham. Naval and military establishments (notably the Royal School of Military Engineering) are there, in addition to resort facilities. Manufactures include clothing, chemicals, furniture, and electrical components. |

Gillingham, England/UK Gelingeham (Dorset), Gyllingeham, Gelingeham (Kent) ‘Homestead of Gylla's People’ from an Old English personal name, ‐inga‐, and hām. The town in Dorset is pronounced with a hard g while the one in Kent has a soft g. In the Domesday Book (1086) both were called Gelingeham.
