Gillingham
Gillingham , town, SE England, on the Medway River, part of the unitary borough of Medway (which also includes Chatham and Rochester ). Some of the former Chatham dockyards were in Gillingham. Naval and military establishments (notably the Royal School of Military Engineering) are there, in addition to resort facilities. Manufactures include clothing, chemicals, furniture, and electrical components. |

Gillingham
Gillingham, England/UK Gelingeham (Dorset), Gyllingeham, Gelingeham (Kent) ‘Homestead of Gylla's People’ from an Old English personal name, ‐inga‐, and hām. The town in Dorset is pronounced with a hard g while the one in Kent has a soft g. In the Domesday Book (1086) both were called Gelingeham.
