Gilbert Arthur Highet

The Columbia Encyclopedia, Sixth Edition
Gilbert Arthur Highet , 1906-78, American classicist, b. Glasgow, Scotland. In 1951 Highet became a citizen of the United States. He was a professor of Greek and Latin at Columbia Univ. from 1938 to 1950 and Anthon professor of Latin language and literature (1950-72). His writings include The Classical Tradition (1949); The Art of Teaching (1950); Juvenal the Satirist (1954); Poets in a Landscape (1957); The Anatomy of Satire (1962); Vergil's Aeneid (1972).
