Duca, Giacomo del
Duca, Giacomo del (b Cefalù, c.1520; d Cefalù, 9 July 1604). Sicilian architect and sculptor, active mainly in Rome, where he was one of Michelangelo's main assistants from the 1540s to the master's death in 1564. His tomb of Elena Savelli in S. Giovanni in Laterano (c.1570) is an impressive work showing Michelangelo's influence, but Giacomo was active more as an architect than a sculptor. In about 1590 he returned to Sicily, where he worked mainly in Messina. Earthquakes have destroyed most of his buildings there, but the dome he added to S. Maria di Loreto in Rome (c.1575) shows him to have been the boldest of Michelangelo's architectural disciples.

Duca, Giacomo del
Duca, Giacomo del (c.1520–1604). Known also as Jacopo Siciliano or Ciciliano, he was born in Cefalù, Sicily, and eventually became a pupil of Michelangelo in Rome. He completed the Master's Porta Pia (1562–5), and designed the Porta San Giovanni (1573–4). He also completed the drum, dome, and lantern of Santa Maria di Loreto (1573–7), near Trajan's column, and designed parts of the piazza before the Palazzo Farnese, Caprarola (1584–6), including the curved ramps, as well as the upper garden with its elaborate water-chain of contorted dolphins.
