Ghazipur
Ghazipur , town (1991 pop. 76,547), Uttar Pradesh state, N central India, on the Ganges River. A district administrative center, Ghazipur is the headquarters of the Indian government's opium monopoly. There is also handloom weaving and a perfume industry. The town is an important agricultural market. Lord Cornwallis, governor-general of British India, died in Ghazipur and is buried there. |

Ghāzīpur
Ghāzīpur, Uttar Pradesh/India Gadhīpūr The name was altered c.1330 in honour of Ghāzī Malik (Masud Malik al‐Sadat), a local Muslim ruler who is said to have won a famous victory over the Hindus, with pur added. Ghazi from the Arabic gāzī can be used as an honorific title for a Muslim fighter against non‐Muslims.
