Germano Celant

Celant, Germano

Celant, Germano (1940– ). Italian art critic. He studied at Genoa University, where he gained a doctorate in art history. In 1967 he coined the term Arte Povera and he is best known as the chief propagandist for this kind of art, although he has also written on other subjects, including the American photographer (also sculptor and collagist) Robert Mapplethorpe (1946–89), whose homoerotic photographs have often aroused controversy. In 1988 Celant was appointed to the new post of curator of contemporary art at the Guggenheim Museum, New York.
