Gergely Czuczor

The Columbia Encyclopedia, Sixth Edition
Gergely Czuczor , 1800-1866, Hungarian philologist and poet, a Benedictine monk. With John Fogarasi he compiled a Hungarian dictionary (completed 1861). He also wrote folk poetry and popular epics. Czuczor was imprisoned (1849-51) for his poem The Alarm (1848), which called Hungary to violent revolt against Austrian rule.
