Georges Desvallieres

Desvallières, Georges

Desvallières, Georges (1861–1950). French painter, born in Paris, where he studied at the École des Beaux-Arts and became one of the founders of the Salon d'Automne in 1903. He was a high-minded man and around this time his work included mythological subjects and morally edifying scenes from everyday life. When his son was killed in the First World War he took a vow to devote himself exclusively to religious art and in 1919 he founded the Ateliers d'Art Sacré with Maurice Denis. He painted murals and designed stained glass for numerous churches in France and other countries (including the USA). His style was somewhat tortuous, with much harsh realistic detail that he hoped would help to convince the irreligious of the ugliness of society.
