George Spalatin

George Spalatin , 1484–1545, German Protestant reformer. His original name was Georg Burckhardt; he was called Spalatin after his birthplace, Spalt, near Nuremberg. An early friend of Martin Luther , Spalatin was devoted to the Lutheran cause, and as secretary and court preacher to Frederick III , elector of Saxony, he served as intermediary between Luther and Frederick—a factor important to the success of the Reformation. He wrote Annales reformationis, a record of events and rulers of the Reformation period. Many letters to him from Luther are extant.

Spalatin, Georg (1484–1545), humanist and Reformer. Georg Burkhardt was born at Spalt (hence his name), near Nürnberg. In 1509 he became tutor to the sons of the Prince Elector, Frederick III of Saxony. In 1511 he was sent to Wittenberg, where he had studied; here he became acquainted with M. Luther. It was mainly through Spalatin's influence that the hesitating Elector was won over to the ideas of the Reformer. In 1525 Spalatin went to Altenburg, where he carried through the change from Catholicism to Lutheranism.
