Freedley, George Reynolds

Freedley, George Reynolds (1904–67), American theatre historian, founder and director of the Theatre Collection of the New York Public Library (see MUSEUMS AND COLLECTIONS). A graduate of George Pierce Baker's ‘47 Workshop’ at Yale, he was for a short time an actor and stage manager on Broadway, where he first appeared in 1928, being associated a year later with the Theatre Guild. In 1931 he joined the staff of the New York Public Library to administer the theatre section based on the recently presented David Belasco Collection, becoming its curator in 1938. He was also one of the founders of the Theatre Library Association in 1939 and was closely associated with the running of the American National Theatre and Academy. From 1938 until his death he was drama critic and drama feature writer of the New York Morning Telegraph, and lectured and wrote extensively on theatre history.
