George Parsons Lathrop

George Parsons Lathrop , 1851-98, American author, b. near Honolulu; studied in Germany (1867-70). He was the husband of Rose Hawthorne Lathrop, the daughter of Nathaniel Hawthorne. Lathrop wrote A Study of Hawthorne (1876), edited the Riverside edition of Hawthorne's works (1883), and adapted Hawthorne's Scarlet Letter for Walter Damrosch's opera (1896). His other writings include poems, Rose and Roof-tree (1875); travel essays, Spanish Vistas (1883); and several novels. Lathrop and his wife were Roman Catholics, and after his death she became a nun.

Lathrop, George Parsons (1851–98), associate editor of the Atlantic Monthly (1875–77), wrote 15 books, ranging from travel accounts to society novels. Following his marriage to Rose Hawthorne, he wrote A Study of Hawthorne (1876), edited her father's works (1883), and in 1896 adapted The Scarlet Letter as a libretto for the opera by Damrosch. Lathrop and his wife became Roman Catholics, and after his death she became a nun under the name Mother Alphonsa.
