George Parsons Lathrop

George Parsons Lathrop , 1851–98, American author, b. near Honolulu; studied in Germany (1867–70). He was the husband of Rose Hawthorne Lathrop, the daughter of Nathaniel Hawthorne. Lathrop wrote A Study of Hawthorne (1876), edited the Riverside edition of Hawthorne's works (1883), and adapted Hawthorne's Scarlet Letter for Walter Damrosch's opera (1896). His other writings include poems, Rose and Roof-tree (1875); travel essays, Spanish Vistas (1883); and several novels. Lathrop and his wife were Roman Catholics, and after his death she became a nun.

Lathrop, George Parsons

Lathrop, George Parsons (1851–98), associate editor of the Atlantic Monthly (1875–77), wrote 15 books, ranging from travel accounts to society novels. Following his marriage to Rose Hawthorne, he wrote A Study of Hawthorne (1876), edited her father's works (1883), and in 1896 adapted The Scarlet Letter as a libretto for the opera by Damrosch. Lathrop and his wife became Roman Catholics, and after his death she became a nun under the name Mother Alphonsa.
