George Cross and Medal
George Cross and Medal. The award was instituted by George VI in September 1940 for acts of outstanding heroism, particularly among the civilian population dealing with the Blitz—firemen, police, ambulance men, and civil defence personnel. The cross, which ranks second only to the Victoria Cross, replaced the Empire Gallantry Medal. The silver cross has a representation of St George slaying a dragon, with a dark blue ribbon. The George Medal has a red ribbon with blue stripes.
