Pencz, Georg
Pencz, Georg ( Jörg Bencz) (b c.1500; d Leipzig, 10/15 Oct. 1550). German painter and engraver of religious and mythological subjects and portraits. He is first documented in 1523 in Nuremberg, where he is presumed to have studied with Dürer, who strongly influenced him. In 1525 he was expelled from Nuremberg with the Beham brothers, two other ‘godless artists’, for their radical Protestant views, but the sentence was soon revoked and he returned to the city. On stylistic evidence he is thought to have visited Italy in the late 1520s and again c.1540. The sharp outlines and glossy textures of his portraits show, in particular, a kinship with Bronzino (Man Holding a Mirror, 1544, Hessisches Landesmuseum, Darmstadt). In 1550 he was appointed painter to Duke Albrecht of Prussia, but he died on the way to take up the post.

Georg Pencz
Georg Pencz , c.1500–1550, German painter and engraver of the Nuremberg school. He probably studied with Dürer in Nuremberg. He was banished in 1525 but soon returned. Pencz is thought to have visited Italy and to have worked with Raimondi. The influence of Italian mannerism is evident in his work. Of his paintings the best are portraits, such as those of Marshal Schirmer (Nuremberg); Erhard Schwetzer and his wife (Berlin); and Young Man (Vienna). As an engraver he ranks among the best of the German "Little Masters." Notable prints include Six Triumphs of Petrarch; portrait of John Frederick I, elector of Saxony; and Life of Christ (26 plates). |
