Burgess, Gelett (Frank)
Burgess, Gelett [Frank] (1866–1951), Massachusetts‐born author, identified with San Francisco, where he led a literary group, Les Jeunes, in editing The Lark (1895–97), in which appeared his quatrain, The Purple Cow, and his drawings of “goops.” His many books include light verse, stories, and drawings, such as Goops and How To Be Them (1900), Are You a Bromide? (1906), and a local‐color novel of San Francisco, The Heart Line (1907).
