Gedaliah

Gedaliah

Gedaliah The governor of Judah appointed by Nebuchadnezzar after its capture in 586 BCE (2 Kgs. 25: 22). He enjoyed the support of Jeremiah and seems to have restored order over what was left of the country. He was murdered by nationalists who regarded him as a collaborator. Later his death (Jer. 41: 2) may have been commemorated by the annual day of mourning on the third day of the seventh month, as mentioned in general terms in Zech. 7: 5.
