Gauteng
Gauteng Province in n central South Africa; the capital is Johannesburg. Formed in 1994 from the Transvaal as PWV (Pretoria-Witwatersrand-Vereeniging), the province was renamed Gauteng in 1995. It is South Africa's smallest but most populous province. Area: 18,810sq km (7260sq mi). Pop. (1996) 7,348,423.

Gauteng
Gauteng, South Africa Pretoria‐Witwatersrand‐Vereeniging A province renamed in 1995. Its present name, ‘City of Gold’, is derived from a Sotho‐Tswana version of eRawutini ‘City of Gold’ which is the Xhosa name for Johannesburg, the provincial capital.
