Gaspar Becerra

Becerra, Gaspar

Becerra, Gaspar (b ?Baeza, c.1520; d ?Madrid, 22/23 Jan. 1568). Spanish Mannerist painter and sculptor. He spent much of his early career in Italy and he was one of Vasari's assistants in his decoration of the Cancelleria Palace, Rome (1546). In about 1557 he returned to Spain and in 1558 he began the main altarpiece of Astorga Cathedral, his most important work as a sculptor. In 1562 he was appointed court painter to Philip II (see Habsburg), for whom his work included a ceiling fresco of Perseus and the Golden Fleece (1562–7) in the palace of El Pardo. His up-to-date knowledge of Italian art gave him a high contemporary reputation.

Becerra, Gaspar

Becerra, Gaspar (c.1520–68). Spanish Mannerist painter and sculptor.
