Gareth
Gareth ♂ Apparently of Celtic origin, but uncertain derivation. It first occurs in Malory's Morte d'Arthur as the name of the lover of Eluned, and seems to have been heavily altered from its original form, whatever that may have been (possibly the same as Geraint;). It is now very popular in Wales. Gary, which is actually an independent name, is often taken to be a pet form of it.

Gareth
Gareth. Hero of Arthurian romance, son of Lot and Morgawse, sponsored by Lancelot and later mistakenly struck down by him. Known as Beaumains in Sir Thomas Malory (c.1470). Although the name Gareth may be of Welsh origin, an earlier speculation, gwaredd [benign, gentle], is now rejected. The French spelling is Gaheriet.
