Galloway
Galloway district, Dumfries and Galloway, SW Scotland. The Rhinns, or Rinns, of Galloway is a rocky double peninsula that juts into the North Channel of the Irish Sea; its southern extremity is called the Mull of Galloway and is the southernmost point in Scotland. The black, hornless Galloway cattle have long been bred in this region. Dairying is the primary industry. |

Galloway
Galloway, Canada, UK, USA UK (Scotland): a region and now part of the unitary district of Dumfries and Galloway (Dumfries). It has a complex early history involving Britons, Angles, Vikings (Norse and Danish), Normans and the so‐called Gall Gaidhil, the ‘Stranger Gaels’, from whom the names of the region and its people are supposed to be derived.

Galloway (district) Dumf. Galweya c.970. ‘(Territory among the) stranger Gaels’. Gaelic gall + Ghaidel. The ‘stranger Gaels’ were people of mixed Irish and Scandinavian descent who settled here in the 9th cent.
