Gaius

Gaius The name of several men who have minor roles in the NT. (1) A native of Derbe who accompanied Paul to Jerusalem (Acts 20: 4 f.). (2) One of the few persons baptized by Paul at Corinth (1 Cor. 1: 14). (3) The recipient of 3 John.

4. Gaius was also the name of the Roman emperor (37–41 CE), surnamed Caligula by his soldiers. He behaved generously towards foreign princes, and restored Agrippa, grandson of Herod the Great, to his kingdom of Judaea. But after a serious illness his enemies claimed he had gone mad and he delighted in hideous cruelties.

Gaius

Gaius , fl. 2d cent., Roman jurist. He is known for the Institutes (repr., 2 vol., 1967; Vol. I is a translation of the text, Vol. II consists of commentaries), a legal textbook that contributed materially to modern knowledge of early Roman law. It was much used in the compilation of the Corpus Juris Civilis .
