GATT
GATT(General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade) An institution founded in the spirit of Bretton Woods by 23 nations in 1947 (with effect from 1 January 1948) to create a harmonious economic world order in which tariffs, which had been so harmful to the international economy during the interwar period, would be reduced as much as possible. Since its foundation, there have been eight rounds of negotiations which resulted in the reduction of trade barriers. On 15 April 1994, after eight years of negotiations, the last GATT agreement to conclude the Uruguay Round was signed by the 110 member states. This would gradually implement a reduction in national subsidies, for example on agricultural products, and the reduction of trade tariffs for most finished and unfinished goods. In 1995, the organization was succeeded by the WTO.
