undertakers
undertakers, the name given to a succession of local power brokers who in the 18th century undertook to manage the business of government in the Irish parliament. In return undertakers expected to be consulted regarding policy and to receive a substantial share in the patronage at government's disposal, using this, along with their personal influence, to deliver the required parliamentary majorities. Such local managers were necessary because lords lieutenant were English politicians who served for relatively short periods and resided in Ireland only during parliamentary sessions. Up to 1714 the role was filled by the leaders of the Irish Whig and Tory parties. Thereafter government business was managed by William Conolly until his death in 1729, by Sir Ralph Gore, less successfully, until he too died in 1733, and then by Henry Boyle, until the money bill dispute ended with a division of power between Boyle and the Ponsonby family. Each leading undertaker, from Conolly to John Ponsonby, was speaker of the House of Commons and held office as a revenue commissioner, chancellor of the exchequer or both, as well as serving as a lord justice when the lord lieutenant was not in residence. Following Lord Townshend's viceroyalty, reliance on undertakers gave way to direct management by a resident lord lieutenant.
