Fronte Nuovo delle Arti

Fronte Nuovo delle Arti

Fronte Nuovo delle Arti (New Art Front). An association of Italian artists founded in 1946 (it was originally called the Nuova Secessione Artistica Italiana but was renamed in 1947). It aimed to combat the pessimism of the postwar world and revitalize Italian art, which had not been a leading force in Europe since the heyday of Futurism. Birolli and Guttuso, were the best-known figures in the group, which embraced artists of very different styles and ideologies. Among the others were the painters Bruno Cassinari (1912–92) and Ennio Morlotti (1910– ) and the sculptors Leonardo Leoncillo (1915–68) and Alberto Viani (1906–89). The split between abstractionists and realists led to the disintegration of the association by 1952, when several of the members joined the Gruppo degli Otto Pittori Italiani.
