Friedrich Franz Karl Hecker

Friedrich Franz Karl Hecker , 1811-81, German revolutionary. A lawyer, he was a leader of the radical republicans in the grand duchy of Baden and during the revolutionary agitation of 1847-49 in Germany, he helped organize the demands for democratic parliamentary government. Prior to the meeting of the Frankfurt Parliament in 1848 he led an unsuccessful uprising in Baden, proclaiming a constitutional republic. Forced into exile, he settled permanently in the United States. A Republican, he supported Lincoln and fought in the Civil War.

Hecker, Friedrich Karl Franz ˈhekər (1811–81) German revolutionary and Union army officer, born in Eichtersheim, Grand Duchy of Baden. Hecker arrived in the United States in 1848, fleeing arrest for treason, and settled in Illinois. He was wounded at Chancellorsville (1863), and later participated in the battle of Missionary Ridge (1863) and in the capture of Chattanooga (1863). He commanded a brigade at Lookout Mountain (1863) but resigned his commission in 1864, believing he had been unfairly passed over for promotion.
