French Morocco
French Morocco, vast French North African protectorate of 6.25 million inhabitants, including 187,000 Europeans, whose sultan, Mohammed Ben Youssef, declared his support for France when the war started in September 1939. Its French resident-general, General Noguès, opposed the US landings at Casablanca in November 1942 (see North African campaign), but remained at his post until the French Committee for National Liberation replaced him in June 1943 with Gabriel Puaux who kept the country under French control, despite the sultan's efforts to gain independence.
Moroccan Tirailleurs took part in the fighting which preceded the fall of France in June 1940 and eight regiments of Goums and Tirailleurs were formed to fight in the North African campaign. Some of these also fought in the Italian campaign, distinguishing themselves at Monte Cassino, and with de Lattre de Tassigny's Armée B during the French Riviera landings in August 1944, and in the fighting that followed. |
