Frederick Howard Carlisle, 5th earl of 1748-1825, British statesman. A member of the distinguished Howard family, he went to the American colonies on an unsuccessful peace mission (1778) and served (1780-82) as lord lieutenant of Ireland. In 1798 he was made guardian of Lord Byron, who ridiculed him in the satirical poem English Bards and Scotch Reviewers (1809).
