Masereel, Frans
Masereel, Frans (1889–1972). Belgian graphic artist and painter, active mainly in France. He was born in Blankenberge and studied at the Academy in Ghent, 1907–8. Before the First World War he travelled extensively and during the war he settled in Switzerland. He moved to Paris in 1920 and in 1940 fled the German invasion and settled in the South of France, thereafter living mainly in Avignon and Nice. Masereel was a prolific illustrator of books and periodicals. Much of his work was motivated by social concern, one of his chief themes being the suffering caused by war. He often used the formula of romans in beelden (novels in pictures), which are series of woodcuts telling a story without a text. His style was mildly Expressionist.
