Franklin
Franklin ♂ Transferred use of the surname, derived from Middle English frankeleyn ‘freeman’, denoting a member of a class of men who were not of noble birth but who were nevertheless freeholders. The vocabulary word is derived from Old French franc, meaning both ‘free’ and ‘Frankish’. The connection between freemen and Franks is reflected in the Late Latin term francalia, originally denoting lands held by Franks, which came to mean lands not subject to taxes. The given name is now quite common, especially in the United States, where it is often bestowed in honour of the statesman and scientist Benjamin Franklin (1706–90). A more recent influence was President Franklin D. Roosevelt (1882–1945).

Franklin 1 City (1990 pop. 12,907), seat of Johnson co., S central Ind., inc. 1823. It is a farm trade center. Manufactures include auto parts, aluminum doors and windows, and copper panels. Franklin College of Indiana is there. 2 City (1990 pop. 11,026), Warren co., SW Ohio, on the Great Miami River, in a farm area; inc. 1813. Paper products are manufactured in the city, which was a flourishing river port in the mid-19th cent. 3 City (1990 pop. 21,855), Milwaukee co., W central Wis., a residential suburb of Milwaukee; inc. 1956. |

Franklin, Canada, USA 1. There are 25 cities and towns with this name in the USA. Most, if not all, are named after Benjamin Franklin (1706–90), who did much to assist in the drafting of the Declaration of Independence and the US Constitution.2. USA (Pennsylvania): originally a Native American village called Venango, forts were built on the site by the French, British, and Americans. The latter fort was called Fort Franklin in 1787 after Benjamin Franklin. In 1795 a town was laid out around it.

franklin English freeholder in the 13th and 14th centuries. Franklins paid a rent for their land and did not owe military service to their lord. Their status was above that of the free peasant but below the gentry. After the BLACK DEATH (1349) the status of many franklins improved in the favourable economic climate. The newly rich and socially ambitious franklin was satirized by Chaucer in the Prologue to his Canterbury Tales.
