Chateaubriand, François René, Vicomte de

Chateaubriand, François René, Vicomte de (1768–1848) French writer and diplomat, whose works contributed to French Romanticism. The Genius of Christianity (1802) was a reaction to Enlightenment attacks on Catholicism and established his literary reputation. Atala (1801) and René (1805) are tragic love stories set in the American wilderness. After 1803, he held important diplomatic posts for both Napoleon I and the Bourbons and was minister of foreign affairs (1823–24). In 1830, he resigned from politics and wrote his Memoirs from Beyond the Grave.

Chateaubriand, François René, Vicomte de

Chateaubriand, François René, Vicomte de (1768–1848), French Romantic writer. He had a distinguished career as a politician. His Génie du christianisme (1802) is a brilliant rhetorical defence of Catholic Christianity. He sought to lift Christianity from the discredit into which the destructive work of 18th-cent. rationalist philosophers had brought it by transferring the debate from the plane of reason to that of feeling.
