Rojas Zorrilla, Francisco de
Rojas Zorrilla, Francisco de (1607–48), Spanish dramatist, friend of Calderón, who in his comparatively short working life produced an astonishing number of plays. The best-known is Del rey abajo, ninguno (None but the King, 1650), in which Garcia del Castañar, a nobleman living quietly in the country, suspects the king of having seduced his wife. He can do nothing about it, except plan to kill his wife to avenge his honour, but when he discovers that the seducer is merely a courtier he kills him instead. Rojas was also the first to write a true comedia a figurón in Entre bobos anda el juego (The Sport of Fools, pub. 1645). His plays were well known in France, where they influenced among others Lesage and Thomas Corneille.
