Child, Francis James

Child, Francis James (1825–96), American scholar, edited Spenser (5 vols, 1855) and wrote a pioneering study of Chaucer (1863), but is most widely known for his great collection of English and Scottish Popular Ballads (5 vols, 1882–98). (See ballad.)
