Hodgkins, Frances
Hodgkins, Frances (1869–1947). New Zealand painter, active mainly in England, where she settled in 1913 after some time spent alternating between the two hemispheres (her first visit to Europe had been in 1901). She was taught watercolour painting by her father—a barrister and amateur artist who had emigrated from England in 1859—and she studied at Dunedin Art School, 1895–8, but she did not begin to paint in oils until 1915. Until that time her work had been conventional, but she gradually developed a more modern style, echoing Matisse and Dufy in its use of vibrant colour (she spent a good deal of time in France). In 1929–34 she was a member of the progressive Seven & Five Society and her late paintings, based on fluid colour, approach abstraction in a manner akin to the work of her fellow member Ivon Hitchens. From the early 1930s she lived mainly at Corfe Castle in Dorset. Her chief subjects were landscape and still-life.
