Fort Jay
Fort Jay a star-shaped U.S. military facility on Governors Island, a half mile (three quarters of a kilometer) from Manhattan in Upper New York Bay. The fortification was built from 1794 to 1800 in preparation for war with France, and was named for the jurist John Jay. After it was rebuilt from 1806 to 1808, it was renamed Fort Columbus, probably because of the unpopularity of a treaty with England (1795) that Jay had negotiated. However, the name Fort Jay was restored in 1904. During World War II, in 1942, Governors Island was designated Eastern Defense Command. The U.S. Army left Governors Island in 1966; from then until 1997 the island was East Coast headquarters and a training center for the U.S. Coast Guard.
